In proton therapy, the dose from secondary neutrons to patient can contribute side effects and creation of cancer. A simple fast detection system distinguish between protons both in pretreatment verification as well potentially vivo monitoring is needed minimize neutrons. Two 3 mm long, 1 diameter organic scintillators were tested for candidacy be used a proton–neutron discrimination detector. The SCSF-3HF (1500) scintillating fibre (Kuraray Co. Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan) EJ-260 plastic scintillator (Eljen Technology, Sweetwater, TX, USA) irradiated at TRIUMF Neutron Facility Proton Therapy Research Centre. beam, we compared raw Bragg peak spread-out response industry standard Markus chamber Both sensors exhibited quenching high LET peak, presenting peak-to-entrance ratio 2.59 2.63 fibre, 3.70 chamber. sensor demonstrated 1.3 times sensitivity sensor. Combined with our equations relating neutron contributions during irradiations, application Birks’ correction, these fibres provide valid candidates inexpensive replicable proton-neutron detectors.

The light output and the detection efficiency of the liquid scintillator EJ-309.

The light output response and the neutron and gamma-ray detection efficiency are determined for liquid scintillator EJ-309. The light output function is compared to those of previous studies. Experimental efficiency results are compared to predictions from GEANT4, MCNPX and PENELOPE Monte Carlo simulations.
